Care of your temporary crown

Care of your permanent crown

What was done today?

Today you had an impression for a crown, a bridge or an inlay/onlay. This restoration is bonded directly to your tooth for increased strength. If you had a temporary placed, it will be used to minimize tooth sensitivity and to prevent shifting of the surrounding teeth while your custom restoration is being made.

What should I expect after the appointment?

Since most crowns, bridges or inlays fit below the gumline, discomfort in this area is likely. This should last only 1 to 2 days. Sensitivity to hot and cold is also possible. Pressure sensitivity during chewing could indicate a bite problem. Adjusting the bite will easily correct this.

How should I care for my temporary?

Your temporary is held on by weak cement. Please follow these directions:

  • Avoid any sticky or hard foods.
  • Chew on the opposite side of where the temporary is located.
  • Brush the temporary like your other teeth but do not floss.
  • If the temporary comes loose, place it back on your tooth and call us for an appointment.
