Root Canal Therapy

Why do I need a root canal?

A root canal (endodontic treatment) is done to correct an infection or abscess in a tooth. These are caused by large cavities, by cavities under existing fillings and crowns, and/or by trauma.

What should I expect after the appointment?

A root canal can take from 1 to 3 appointments to complete depending on each case. You may experience any of the following symptoms after any appointment:

  • Sensitivity to hot and/or cold.
  • Sensitivity to pressure or biting forces
  • Generalized soreness
  • Swelling

It is virtually impossible to predict which symptom, if any, you may experience and to what extent. Some may have mild discomfort, while others may experience severe pain and swelling. Sometimes pain medication (ibuprofen) may be necessary for the first few days.

If you experience swelling, call my office. You may need a prescription for an antibiotic.

What should I expect after the appointment?

Your tooth will have a sedative filling placed between visits. This is a temporary filling, so please follow these directions:

  • Avoid any sticky or hard foods
  • When eating, chew on the opposite side of your mouth
  • Brush this tooth like your other teeth

After the root canal, is my tooth completed?

During the root canal procedure the blood, nutrient and nerve supply to the tooth is removed. This causes the tooth to become brittle and prone to fracture. If a fracture occurs, extraction of the tooth is very possible. In most cases, a full crown will be recommended to help strengthen and support the weakened tooth, thus preventing a fracture.
